He was awarded Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (1976), Fellow Academy of Medicine, Singapore (1978) and Fellow of American College of Physicians (1983). He was conferred honorary Fellow of Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh (1991) and Glasgow (1991) and Royal Australasian College of Physicians (1993) during his tenure as Chairman, Committee of Internal Medicine, School of Postgraduate Medicine, National University of Singapore.

Dr Tan Yew Oo is currently the consultant medical oncologist and hematologist with Singapore Oncology Consultants at Gleneagles Cancer Centre and Mt Alvernia Hospital. After graduating from the University of Singapore in 1971, he proceeded to United States and Canada for his post-graduate residency/fellowship training in Internal Medicine, Hematology and Medical Oncology. Upon completion of his training, he was certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine (1976), Hematology (1978) and Medical Oncology (1981) and obtained specialist certification in Internal Medicine (1975) and Hematology (1978) awarded Fellow of Royal College of Physicians of Canada in 1975.

He joined the Faculty of Medicine, National University of Singapore as a Lecturer in 1978 and rapidly promoted to Professor of Medicine in 1991. He was promoted to the Chief of Medicine at National University Hospital (NUH) and Head, Division of Hematology-Oncology at NUH in 1988. He was instrumental in setting up the specialty of Medical Oncology at Singapore General Hospital and later National University Hospital. He has been the mentor and teacher to many prominent medical oncologists in Singapore.

During his tenure in the university, he published extensively and was invited as an invited speaker at regional and international medical meetings. He resigned from the university to go into private practice in 1993.

Whilst in private practice, he remains active in medical education and postgraduate training. He served in the Specialist Training Committee of Medical Oncology, Academy of Medicine/Ministry of Health, Singapore, Chairman of the National Committee on Cancer Care of the Ministry of Health, reviewer of grants of the National Medical Research Council and consultant to the Health Science Authority, Ministry of Health for registration of anti-cancer drugs in Singapore. He was examiner in Master of Medicine (M. Med) in Family Medicine until 2001, Board of Directors of Singapore Health Services (SingHealth) Pte Ltd from 2001 till 2006, Specialist Accreditation Board of Ministry of Health from 2004 till 2007. He continues to serve in the Complaints Committee of Singapore Medical Council and the Advance Medical Directive Act of the Ministry of Health. He remains active in clinical cancer research and he is one of the few private medical oncologists who participates in Phase III clinical trials on novel anti-cancer agents. He continues to be invited to lecture at many local and regional medical conferences and seminars.
He also participates in several international phase III clinical trials using PTK 787 in Confirm 1, lapatinib in breast cancer, IPASS in NSCLC with Iressa and E7389 in breast cancer.

He was the consultant medical oncologist to the former President of Singapore, Mr. Ong Teng Cheong when he was diagnosed to have non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 1992.
