Singapore Cardiac Society Singapore Heart Foundation Visiting Consultant to National Heart Center Visiting Associate Professor NTU Dr. Tan Yong Seng is a Consultant Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgeon practicing at both the Mount Elizabeth Medical Centre and Gleneagles Medical Centre. He was the former Director of Heart Transplant at the National Heart Centre and a Senior Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon at the National Heart Centre.
He is currently a Visiting Consultant to National Heart Centre and also a Visiting Associate Professor at Nanyang Technological University. He received his MBBS from the National University of Singapore (1984) with distinctions in Biochemistry and Microbiology. He was awarded Gibbs Gold Medal for his undergraduate medical studies. He became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh)in 1988, the Academy of Medicine, Singapore (1995), the International College of Surgeons (USA) (2006) and the American College of Cardiology (2006). Dr. Tan spent two years in world renowned heart centres for his advanced training in heart and lung surgery. He was a Clinical Fellow in Cardiovascular Surgery at both Mayo Clinic, USA (1992) and at Cleveland Clinic Foundation, USA (1993). Dr. Tan has extensive experience in heart surgery. He has helped many patients with heart diseases. He does both on pump and off pump coronary artery bypass surgery He does minimally invasive surgery. In addition he also perform mitral, aortic & tricuspid valve repair and replacement surgery, surgery for aortic aneurysm, heart transplants, implantation of heart assist devices, and heart failure surgery. Besides heart operations he also performs lung operation such as lung cancer removal, thymus surgery and varicose vein and other vascular surgery. Dr Tan has published extensively in peer-reviewed local and international journals and has spoken at conferences in China, Malaysia, Thailand and USA. His research interests include design and assessment of a new sleeve technique for minimally invasive coronary artery bypassing grafting and developing & evaluating new energy source for heart assist device. Besides being a heart surgeon, Dr Tan is also a strong advocate for 3 “P” Medicine. 3P Medicine is an acronym for “Predictive, Preventive and Personalized Health Care Management. Dr Tan is a strong advocate in preventive medicine. He believes strongly in controlling patients risk factors in order to avoid dreadful complications. He gives detail patient education in disease prevention. He also prescribes personalised health management plan for all his patients. Dr Tan aspires to be the doctor of the future. “The doctor of the future will give no medicine, but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, in diet and in the cause and prevention of disease。” Dr Tan is also currently the Vice Chairman of Singapore Heart Foundation. He is frequently invited to give education talks on Heart Health Assessment, Prevention & Treatment for both Singapore , overseas audiences, and many corporate organizations in Singapore such as banks, Hewlett Packard, PUB, health insurance company etc. |
